Acoustics that support music education
At Lingfield College, we developed the acoustic design for teaching, practice and rehearsal spaces within the new 6,000 sq ft Music Centre, built above the existing ground-floor Drama Studio.
The design challenge
The different spaces needed acoustic conditions suited to teaching speech, individual practice and ensemble rehearsal, while controlling sound transmission to the Drama Studio below.
Our acoustic design
We addressed room-acoustic treatment and the control of airborne and structure-borne sound transmission. Treatment quantities and layouts responded to the different requirements of each teaching, practice and rehearsal space.
Acoustic design criteria
The design was informed by ÖNORM B 8115-3:2005 for musicians’ rehearsal spaces, with BB93 guiding the acoustic criteria for spaces intended for teaching.
